Convicted Child Sex Offender Sent to Prison Work Camp, Scheduled to be released in 2037
Last week, Alex Dillon Boatwright, 35, was sent to a Florida prison work camp to serve his 12-year prison sentence after being convicted of 12 counts of possessing child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
On November 5, 2024, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received an investigative lead regarding a Google account with the username “Alex Boatwright” engaging in child exploitation. The tip included 60 videos and two photos depicting CSAM, which were uploaded to Boatwright’s account between June 29, 2021 and October 21, 2024.
As the investigation continued and search warrants were returned, police reportedly found “[20] additional [CSAM] images/videos that weren’t reported in the CyberTip, as well as two videos of beatility (one involving a pubescent [girl] and one involving adults).”
Gainesville Police Department officers arrested Boatwright in August 2025 and charged him with 22 counts of possessing CSAM, but prosecutors later dropped ten of the charges. After the dropped charges, Boatwright faced a maximum sentence of 50 years in prison.
When approached by police, Boatwright indicated that he knew why officers were present before stating he had a “former email that [he] got locked out [of].” Seemingly referring to the CSAM that he downloaded, Boatwright said he had “no interest in this… I was like no, not me type of thing.”
One of Boatwright’s relatives told police that Boatwright “accidently downloaded the material while looking at other pornography.”
Boatwright’s case was resolved with a plea agreement between his public defender and the Eighth Judicial Circuit State Attorney's Office. His prison sentence will be followed by eight years of sex offender probation. The plea deal was accepted by Judge Susanne Wilson Bullard.
Prior to the plea deal, some of Boatwright’s family members wrote letters to the court requesting leniency.
Boatwright’s aunt said she is concerned that he “will not survive prison” because he is a “gentle” and “caring” person “with an easy-going personality,” and because he “does not know how to fight because that is not his nature.” Boatwright’s aunt said he worked for the Hilton Hotel in Gainesville.
In another letter, Boatwright’s great aunt recalled a phone call Boatwright made from jail. Boatwright told her he made a “huge mistake” and that he was reading the Bible with another inmate.
Boatwright’s other great aunt told the court that Boatwright “is young enough to realize his mistake and move productively forward,” and that he is “sorry.”
Boatwright is scheduled to be released on August 23, 2037.
