An Alachua County Sheriff’s Office school resource deputy (SRO) arrested an 18-year-old senior at Eastside High School (EHS) towards the end of last month on two felony charges of resisting arrest and police battery.

SRO Marquise Brathwaite reported the following:

“On Tuesday, September 30, 2025 at or about 12:40PM at EHS… the principal assistant came to me during lunch and requested my assistance with students who were in an unauthorized area in the front office. As I walked to the back to see what the students were doing, I observed a young lady warming something up in the microwave that she was told that she is not authorized to use. I asked the young lady to stop the microwave and please leave the area. She attempted to bargain with me and as I attempted to stop the microwave she grabbed my wrist…
I gave her a warning and explained that she is not to grab my wrist and that she could be charged for that. She told me she did not care. As I continued to try and push the button on the microwave to stop it, she intentionally pushed my hand a second time. She then grabbed whatever she was warming up and tried to quickly exit.
As I caught up to her, I attempted to grab her so I could detain her. She began to actively resist me by trying to pull away from me and bunker herself down. I had to grab her by both arms and escort her around the corner as not to make a scene in the front office. I then attempted to get her on the wall to handcuff her and she continued to actively resist me. After the struggle with her, I was able to place her in handcuffs.
[The student] is being charged with Battery on LEO and Resisting Arrest without Violence.”

Court records indicate the student spent the night in the Alachua County Jail until her first appearance the following day. She was released on her own recognizance by Judge Jonathan Ramsey.
