Gainesville Man Arrested for Domestic Violence

Alachua County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Derek Michael Chanove, 43, on June 7 and charged him with domestic battery.
According to the arrest report, deputies responded to the victim’s residence after a neighbor called saying she heard screaming and saw a male figure leaving the area.
Deputies found the victim in a large amount of chest pain. She told them that she had fallen but later revealed in a call with a family member that Chanove hurt her.
The victim and Chanove were reportedly arguing over him possibly cheating, and she wanted to look through his phone. Chanove let the victim see his phone but snatched it back after a few moments.
Chanove reportedly slammed a can of beer on the floor and started exiting the residence.
When the victim confronted Chanove, he “forcefully and intentionally elbowed” her in the chest causing visible injuries, according to the arrest report.
Chanove “admitted to starting the altercation by provoking the victim and over reacting physically when confronted,” the arrest report states.
Chanove was released after posting a $25,000 bond, court records show.
