GPD Asks For Help Locating Lewis Place Apartments Shooter

Updated April 21: The Gainesville Police Department has announced that Carter was shot in his home by a toddler who had access to a firearm. Carter's family reportedly knew what occurred and chose to cover it up, depriving the toddler and two minor witnesses of crisis-related services.

Carter's mother, Lawanda Wade, 50, was arrested on April 17th and charged with one count of obstructing justice and two counts of child cruelty. She has since been released on a bond of $30,000.

Carter's brother, Quante Whitaker, 29, has been charged with three counts of obstructing justice, two counts of child cruelty, and one count of perjury. He was arrested yesterday.


The Gainesville Police Department (GPD) has asked for assistance in locating the killer of a Gainesville man.

GPD officers found a man shot after responding to Lewis Place apartments in the evening of March 24 at 6:50 pm. The man later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

GPD’s release states,

“Detectives assigned to the case have been actively investigating the incident and are now reaching out to the public for any assistance.
Anyone who may have had contact with [the victim,] Bernard Carter III on March 24th or possess any information regarding the incident or the individuals involved are urged to come forward.
