“Went Too Far:” Woman’s Child Cruelty Case Escalates to Murder After Two-Year-Old Dies in Hospital
Jessica Neathea Wilson (ACSO Jail)

Sunday morning, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office deputies charged Jessica Neathea Wilson, 29, with second-degree murder.

Wilson was initially booked into the Alachua County Jail in the early morning of June 19 on charges of child abuse and aggravated child abuse against her two-year-old daughter.

Deputies responded to Wilson’s apartment after receiving reports of a medical emergency from another resident (witness).

Deputies arrived on scene to find the victim unresponsive, prompting them to grab her and run to paramedics.

Wilson made initial statements to police that she “beat” the victim. Deputies observed bruises on the victim’s body as she was transported to the hospital.

Deputy Jeremy York was called to the scene to work as lead detective. York spoke with the witness, who said she called 911 after Wilson woke her up stating the victim was having a seizure. The victim was unresponsive, and the witness told Wilson to call 911, but she did not.

The witness started performing CPR on the victim while still telling Wilson to call 911. Wilson did not, prompting the witness to call the police.

The witness reportedly indicated that Wilson wanted to avoid calling the police out of fear of getting in trouble.

The witness reported that two days prior she noticed the victim had a bloody lip. Wilson reportedly told her the victim fell down and hit her lip. The witness reportedly had no reason to doubt Wilson’s statements at the time.

York reported, “While at the scene, I was informed that the Victim had arrived at the hospital and was in critical condition. The Victim was placed in a medically induced coma. Medical staff noted several internal injuries, to include skull fractures [and] bruises to the head, chest and back. There was possible internal bleeding as well, and her chance of survival was not known at this time.”

In a post-Miranda interview, Wilson reportedly said she “punished” the victim with a belt because she “was not listening.” Deputies found two belts at the crime scene, which were collected as evidence.

According to the arrest report, Wilson “admitted to beating the child severely with closed fists, hands and feet. She also admitted that the Victim had attempted to get away from the beating but [she pulled her] back... [Wilson] admitted to striking the Victim in the head and body with her fist and then also stomping on the Victim's back with her foot when she was lying on the floor. [Wilson] stated that she, ‘went too far’ and knew she ‘went too far’ before the Victim began to have a seizure. It should be noted that [Wilson] stated that the Victim had no history of seizures. [Wilson] also admitted that two days prior to this incident, she had struck the Victim with closed fists and caused her to have a bloody lip and more bruising, which was seen by the Witness, but [Wilson] lied and said that the Victim fell.”

After completing his interview with Wilson, York was informed that the victim’s health was in decline and she was rushed into surgery.

York went on to report, “On June 21, 2026, I was informed by the dedicated medical professionals at Shands Hospital, that the Victim in this case succumbed to her devastating injuries and [was] pronounced deceased on this day. This new information confirms what I feared the night this tragic incident occurred and I have no choice but to add the charge of Second-Degree Murder Dangerous Depraved without Premeditation against the Defendant in this case. The overwhelming evidence in this case supports this charge.”

Prosecutors have filed a pretrial detention motion against Wilson that is scheduled to be heard on Wednesday.

ACSO released the following statement on this case:

"Earlier today, our agency learned that the beautiful 2-year-old child in this case succumbed to the injuries she sustained on June 18.
Over the past three days, medical personnel worked tirelessly in a desperate effort to save her life. During that same time, Deputies, Detectives, and Forensic Investigators worked diligently to collect every piece of evidence connected to this investigation. Many also spent time visiting this sweet little girl in the hospital, holding onto hope and praying for her recovery.
The weight of this case has been felt throughout our agency. The life of this courageous child, though far too short, has left a lasting impact on the hearts and minds of everyone involved.
This morning, the lead detective briefed our command staff and summarized the emotional toll of this investigation by stating:
'I hope that none of us ever have to experience a case like this again, but we chose this profession knowing there would be days like this'
As a result of the child’s death, Jessica Wilson has now been charged with Second Degree Murder and remains in custody at the Alachua County Jail.
To the little girl whose life was taken far too soon: You mattered. You were loved. While we cannot undo the pain and fear you endured, please know that countless people were fighting for you, praying for you, and hoping for a different outcome.
Though your time on this earth was brief, your life was meaningful. We will continue to be your voice and pursue justice on your behalf.
May you rest in eternal peace."
