Lawyer for Pastor’s Son Makes Motion to Consolidate Three Sex Abuse Charges into One Case as New Prosecutor Takes Reigns
The lawyer for Christian Vargas has submitted a motion to consolidate his three sexual abuse charges into one case.
Vargas is the son of Mark Vega, the lead pastor of Ignite Life Center Church.
Vega faces a count of failing to report suspected child abuse. Police reports describe Vega using his role at Ignite Life Center to conceal several child sexual abuse incidents from legal authorities over multiple years. He and his son are both out on bond.
Vargas faces two counts of lewd/lascivious battery against a victim under 15 and one count of lewd/lascivious molestation against a victim 12-16 while 18+.
Criminal Defense Attorney Gilbert Schaffnit wrote, “Although the allegations in the pending cases are not alleged to have arisen from a single criminal episode and are separated temporally, [the] Defendant [Christian Vargas] affirmatively elects consolidation because the anticipated evidentiary presentation in each proceeding will substantially overlap the others and because separate trials are unlikely to provide any meaningful reduction in prejudice.”
The motion cites former Assistant State Attorney (ASA) Lua Lepianka saying that she was unopposed to consolidation of the cases.
Earlier this week, Lepianka, who was the ASA for Vargas’ and Vega’s cases, began serving as a judge following an appointment by Governor Ron DeSantis.
Christopher Holz is now the ASA prosecuting Vega and Vargas, according to court records.
In the motion, Schaffnit strongly indicates the cases are moving towards trial, moving away from prior talks of a plea deal
Vargas has a case management hearing scheduled for September 14 and a hearing date hasn’t been set for the consolidation motion.
Vega’s next case management hearing is scheduled for November 9.
Ignite Life Center was recently foreclosed and ownership reverted to the mortgage lender after an auction received no interest from any outside buyers.
It's unclear what the next move is for Ignite Life Center as a ministry. Vega, who bonded out three hours after surrendering himself to the jail in November 2025, has no orders barring him from travel while on pretrial release. Vega has built a partnership between Ignite Life Center and a ministry in Cuiabá, Brazil, which has continued after his arrest. Vega preached in Cuiabá in February 2026, and he reportedly traveled to New York in correlation with his work as pastor of Ignite Life Center in May 2026.
Vargas was required to surrender his passport to the court earlier this year but Vega was not.
