Man Transferred from State Hospital to Jail for Mental Health Review of 2020 Sexual Assault Case
Tenzin Norbu Bhumba (ACSO Jail)

Tenzin Norbu Bhumba, 34, is back in jail for a mental health review of his sexual assault case.

In November 2020, police arrested Bhumba and prosecutors later filed formal charges of attempted sexual battery by use of force, tampering/obstruction, kidnapping, and burglary with assault or battery; all first-degree felonies

In January 2021, Bhumba was adjudicated to be mentally unfit to stand trial and later transferred to Northeast Florida State Hospital, court records show.

In March 2026, Bhumba’s public defender moved to dismiss the case due to Bhumba’s prolonged incompetency.

As of August 2026, a doctor opined that Bhumba is now competent to proceed, according to a letter from institution counsel representing the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF).

In September 2026, Bhumba was booked back into the Alachua County Jail for a competency hearing scheduled for today (Oct. 1) at 9 a.m., at the Alachua County Criminal Courthouse. The hearing is set to be followed by a felony forensics commitment review in approximately two weeks.

Bhumba is currently ineligible for pretrial release.
