Reddit Predator Sentenced to 35 Years in Prison at Gainesville Federal Courthouse

Wednesday afternoon, Ronald Pate Newman, 27, was sentenced to 35 years in prison followed by a lifetime of federal supervision at the Gainesville Federal Courthouse after grooming and sexually abusing a child on Reddit. Newman pleaded guilty to two counts of producing child sexual abuse material in exchange for the government dropping a third count that he was facing.

Newman faced a maximum sentence of life in prison, but Chief District Judge Allen Winsor imposed 35 years, the lowest permissible prison sentence due to Newman’s prior convictions.

In 2018, Newman was convicted in Kentucky on 28 counts of distributing obscene matter to minors and 13 counts of possessing or viewing matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor (all charges from one case). The sentence hasn't been verified, but Newman registered as a sex offender in Ohio in January 2022 and was re-offending by March 2025. 

On April 28, 2025, the victim’s mother met with police about sexual messages she found on her daughter’s phone. She learned the person sending the sexual messages was Newman, a registered sex offender living in Ohio. 

Newman was arrested in Ohio on October 7, 2025. The case was investigated by the Levy County Sheriff’s Office. 

The victim told police that she joined Reddit “to see funny posts and share jokes” and she was active in a “safe for work” subreddit, which indicates that posts there are appropriate. She saw funny posts made by Newman, who said he’d tell more jokes to anyone who privately messages him.

According to the Statement of Facts, “The first messages exchanged were jokes; however, [Newman] began asking the victim to send pictures of herself, first clothed and then later unclothed. Before [Newman] asked for the naked pictures, he sent a picture of his penis to the victim. When the victim told [Newman] she was uncomfortable sending naked pictures, he began to act like he didn’t want to be friends and told her he would stop messaging her, saying things like ‘I guess you hate me…’ When she would refuse to send [Newman] pictures, he would tell her that her rejection was making his depression worse and made him want to kill himself.”

Newman distributed an explicit photo of the victim on a “not safe for work” subreddit, which indicates that posts there are not appropriate. Newman further coerced the victim into sending nude photos to other Reddit users. 

Newman told the victim that “he was a sex offender because he had exchanged naked pictures with a 14-year-old when he was 18 to get revenge on his cheating girlfriend.”

After Newman’s arrest, he was found to have at least 150 child sexual abuse images, which included six images involving sadomasochism, 29 images involving infants/toddlers, and two involving infants/toddlers and animals.

According to court documents from his prior case, Newman was a student at the Southern Baptist Seminary at the time of the offense (2017). Court documents state, "Newman, voluntarily and on his own free will, was interviewed by detective[s]. Newman stated that he had been communicating with a 14 year old female via Skype... Newman said that between the dates March, 3, 2017 and March 7, 2017 he received nude pictures and videos from the juvenile. Newman showed detective[s] several [of the] pictures... Newman stated he also sent pictures of his penis and him masturbating to the juvenile."

At this time, it’s unclear which federal prison Newman will serve out his sentence in. He may be held liable for monetary restitution towards the victim and he waived his appearance at the potential restitution hearing.
