Gainesville residents and students should stay alert for a sexual offender if they're using the Rails to Trails pathway to walk, bike, or run.

On February 19, the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) made a Facebook post to address numerous reports of sexual offenses occurring on the Rails to Trails path in Gainesville.

“Reported incidents include a suspect on a bicycle groping trail users, indecent exposure, and acts of public masturbation,” states the post.

According to GPD, “These behaviors are unacceptable and will not be tolerated. The safety of our community remains our top priority.”

Announcement from GPD

The reports of sex offenses occurring on Rails to Trails date back to January 9, GPD stated openly; however, they waited over a month since the first report to make a post giving notification.

“We urge anyone who witnesses suspicious activity or experiences any of these behaviors to call 9-1-1 immediately,” reports GPD. “Prompt reporting allows officers to respond quickly and helps us identify and apprehend those responsible.”

GnvInfo emailed GPD Public Information Officer Brandon Hatzel for comments regarding suspect information, the number of reports, and reasoning for the over month-long delay in public announcement from the first report. Hatzel hasn't replied.

GPD listed a set of safety precautions in their post that they encouraged trail users to follow:

  • “Remain alert and aware of your surroundings at all times.
  •   Be mindful of the people around you.
  •   If using the trail at night, travel with a companion whenever possible.
  •   Carry a light source and ensure you are visible.
  •   Walk confidently and at a steady pace.
  •   If you feel threatened or are in danger, attract attention and seek help immediately.”

The Facebook post concludes, “The Police Department will be increasing patrols and officer presence along the trail in an effort to deter this behavior and ensure public safety. If you see something, say something. Your vigilance and cooperation are essential in keeping our community safe.”
