Veterans for Peace Announces Upcoming Peace Poetry Reading and Peace Scholarship Awards Ceremony
Veterans for Peace Chapter 14 Gainesville Fl Press Release:
Gainesville’s local chapter of Veterans for Peace – Chapter 14 – will hold their annual Peace Poetry and Peace Scholarship Awards Ceremony on Saturday, May 18, 2024 from 2pm to 3:30pm at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Gainesville.
In its 14th year, this free, public event features music and refreshments and showcases poetry written by area K-12 students. Out of the hundreds of peace and/or social justice-related poems that were submitted this year, 22 were chosen as the most inspiring, and the young authors were invited to read their poems during the event. Veterans for Peace will also announce this year’s four recipients of their Peace and Social Justice Scholarship. Each scholarship awardee will receive $1.5K.
Parents and teachers play a large role in the Peace Poetry Contest by encouraging the young poets to participate, so we wish to thank them at the event as well.
Every year submitted poems are judged by a panel of community and Veterans for Peace members and the winning poems are published in an annual Peace Poetry Contest Book, which will be available at the event.
All awardees will later be highlighted at the Winter Solstice Peace Concert, which Veterans for Peace puts on every year in December at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Gainesville as well.
Veterans for Peace members believe in the power of promoting peace at the local level and they strive for an end to injustice, violence, and war internationally. Scott Camil, VFP Chapter 14’s President, said, “The Peace Poetry Contest is our way of stimulating discussion and critical thinking among our area youth,” and added, “addressing tough subjects early on is the best way to achieve our greater cause of world peace.”
