Commissioner Responds to FBI Arresting GPD Detective
Gainesville City Commissioner Bryan Eastman has responded on his Instagram to the arrest of Gainesville Police Department (GPD) Detective Kelvin Mattair.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)'s arrest of Mattair was announced on Monday.
In Alachua County Criminal Court, Mattair faces four counts of obstructing a criminal investigation, three counts of fraud/abuse and one count of illegal interception of communications. Combined, the charges carry a statutory maximum of 40 years in prison. Judge Meshon Rawls set the bond at $75,000 per each count for a total of $600,000.
Eastman commented positively on State Attorney Brian Kramer stating GPD is not under investigation and that they were a partner to the FBI.
“From everything I'm being told so far this appears to be one individual who made a series of decisions that are now alleged to be criminal,” said Eastman. “Sad day, we'll be monitoring and keeping everything informed as the case goes further.”
According to the charging affidavit, authorities began investigating Mattair in late 2025 for his “possible involvement in assisting local drug-dealers and convicted felons.” A Gainesville native reported that the community knows Mattair notifies local drug dealers of upcoming GPD warrants.
“Investigations into many of these individuals have been affected by sensitive law enforcement information being passed to the subjects or friends and relatives of the subjects of those investigations,” states the report.
The report identifies Mattair as a member of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit and Gun Violence Unit (GVU) detective, having been employed with GPD since 2018. The report notes that Mattair previously worked for the Reichert House, an after-school program for at-risk youth.
