On October 6, 2024, Brandon Daniel Thompson, 33, was arrested and charged with domestic battery (misdemeanor) and domestic battery by strangulation (felony).

Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) Deputy Isaac Minck reported:

"Based upon statements from Victim 1 and 2, along with cell-phone video of the event recorded by Victim 1, The defendant aggressively approached Victim 2 and shoved her out of the doorway with his shoulder and elbow without making any verbal request for her to move. Upon shoving Victim 2 out of the way, he charged at Victim 1 while loudly shouting obscenities and calling her a 'Bitch.'
The defendant threw her down onto a couch in the living area of the room, and utilized both of his hands to firmly grasp her by the throat and press her down into the couch, preventing Victim 1 from being able to freely breathe. Victim 1 is audible in the video stating 'Get off of my neck' multiple times, and a physical struggle is evident as the cell phone video becomes dark and fragmented in such a manner as to suggest the phone being crushed by the defendant's body. Victim 1 described the feeling of being choked as 'Feeling like I was going to die.'
Throughout the encounter, the defendant is audible making demeaning, intimidating, and degrading statements directed at Victim 1, in a manner consistent with personal, vindictive, and targeted intent to do Victim 1 bodily harm. The defendant made post-Miranda statements admitting to striking Victim 1 and to placing his hands around her neck."

Prosecutors later reduced the felony to a misdemeanor when formally filing the charges.

Taking a no contest plea deal on April 2, 2025, Thompson was convicted of the two misdemeanors and sentenced to 18 months of probation.

On December 18, 2025, Thompson submitted a motion to terminate his probation early, but it was denied by Judge Susan Miller-Jones.
