Gainesville Man Facing Pretrial Detention After Strangling Woman on Camera

Judge James Colaw denied the pretrial detention motion but Erik Hamilton was unable to post the set $200,000 bond as his case was ongoing. ($150,000 for the strangulation charge and $50,000 for the aggravated battery charge).

In March 2025, prosecutors dropped the strangulation charge. Two months later, Hamilton pled no contest to aggravated battery and was sentenced to two and a half years in prison followed by three years of probation.


Erik Collin Hamilton, 33, was arrested Monday night and charged with aggravated battery and domestic battery by strangulation. 

Hamilton reportedly showed up at the victim’s house uninvited and moved her security cameras. 

Hamilton argued with the victim about the cameras, leading to him strangling her. The victim reported that she felt like Hamilton intended to kill her. Hamilton was using two hands, moving the victim around, and screaming in her face during the attack.

Gainesville Police Department (GPD) Officer Cody Meshes reported that a video shows Hamilton strangling the victim.   

Hamilton has no bond pending a pretrial detention motion by the State Attorney’s Office. 

Hamilton was charged with child cruelty in 2017 but the charge was dropped.
