Hawthorne Man Arrested for Physical and Sexual Violence

Alachua County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Cody Lee Smith, 27, last week on a warrant for aggravated battery, sexual battery, kidnapping and obstructing justice.
According to the police report, on May 26 the victim found out that Smith impregnated another woman. When she confronted him, Smith became hostile and began pushing the victim around, knocking her into walls and furniture. Smith shoved the victim hard enough that a doorframe broke against her body.
After battering the victim, Smith then locked her in a room and took her cell phone and car keys, the police report states. Smith reportedly choked the victim until her vision was blurry.
Deputies on the scene observed the broken door frame and a hole in the wall, as Smith attempted to punch the victim at one point but missed.
The police report states Smith kept the victim locked up for two days, during which time he raped her and sat on her stomach, despite her pregnancy. Smith reportedly sat on the victim's stomach for two hours, not letting her move.
The police report references medical documents that show the victim is in a medical treatment program due to a high-risk pregnancy caused by the trauma.
The victim reported the incident on July 4, and Smith was arrested on July 10.
Smith denied the allegations when speaking with police over the phone.
The State Attorney’s Office has filed a pretrial detention motion on Smith to be heard by Judge Robert Groeb on Monday.
Smith is currently on felony drug probation out of Putnam County. He previously asked a judge to terminate his probation, saying, "I am ready to move on with my life, making better choices for my future."
