Pastor’s Son Misses Court, Judge Sets New Bond at $500,000
Monday morning, Judge Robert Groeb declared that Christian Vargas, 22, was in violation of court orders for failing to appear at his scheduled arraignment.
After confirming Vargas wasn’t present in the courtroom or the hallway, Groeb said he will “revoke his pretrial status” and “strip his bond in favor of the State of Florida.” Groeb set Vargas’ new bond at $500,000. Vargas has not yet been re-arrested.
An arraignment is often an introductory hearing in a criminal case and consists of a defendant submitting their plea. A defendant can waive their arraignment if they submit a plea before but Vargas didn’t do that with his new case. It’s unlawful to simply skip the arraignment with no notification, as Vargas has.
Vargas was initially arrested in 2023 on two cases stemming from him reportedly sexually abusing two girls aged 12-15 at Ignite Life Center Church. He posted a bond of $40,000.
In 2025, Vargas was charged for a third case in juvenile court in relation to a third girl he reportedly victimized around the same time as the other two (2021).
Earlier this year, Vargas’ third case was transferred to felony court. This caused the case to become public record.
Vargas was arrested again and released after posting a $250,000 bond.
Vargas’ attorney in his first two cases is Gilbert Schaffnit, but there are no court documents formally indicating the appearance of defense counsel for Vargas’ third case.
Prosecuting attorney Lua Lepianka told the court that Schaffnit asked about a bond reduction on the $250,000 but Vargas ended up posting it anyway. Lepianka affirmed that Vargas didn’t have formal representation on the new case but that she anticipates Schaffnit will be involved.
Vargas is the son of Mark Vega, who faces a count of failing to report suspected child abuse while serving as the head pastor of Ignite Life Center.

Vega also remains out on bond. Vega has no travel restrictions and ministered to children in Brazil while having an open criminal case in Gainesville for his actions as a pastor.
