The Gainesville City Commission voted to remove the sidewalks after the Florida Department of Transportation issued a memo against “surface markings that are not in direct support of traffic control or public safety” and threatened to cut funding for noncompliance.

As of 10 am, Public Works employees are still working on the NE 1st crosswalk and haven’t yet started with the others.
