Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Possessing CSAM
On May 7, Gerald Roy Morris, 72, entered an open no contest plea for one count of transmitting child sexual abuse material (CSAM), in addition to 25 counts of possessing CSAM. This means Morris didn't overtly admit guilt but also didn't contest the charges.
An Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) Facebook post summarizes their investigation into Morris. ACSO reported that they found “more than 59,000 illicit files involving children or CSAM” on Morris’ devices.
By entering an open plea, Morris gave Judge James Colaw full discretion on sentencing, and there wasn't a prior negotiated agreement with prosecutors.
Morris was subject to a presentence investigation that Colaw received. Presentence investigations are completed by the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC).
Morris’ counsel submitted a downward departure motion.
Morris’ request for leniency ultimately fell short, with Colaw imposing a life sentence Thursday morning.
Presentence investigations generally aren't made available to the public due to their exemption in public record laws. Morris' downward departure motion isn't currently viewable on the court records website.
Morris is currently in the Alachua County Jail awaiting transportation to an FDC facility.
